Reputation, is defined as “the beliefs or opinions that are generally held about someone or something.” I had a little experience this week, that got me thinking, what is my reputation. What do I want people to believe about me?
Every summer, we take a couple of weeks to do some renovating on the studio. Money is tight there so our little piece of the world is always a work in progress. This week we have been filling and sanding holes in the walls. Not an easy task when there are about a million holes in the building. We were covered in dust, the place was turned upside down. I was wearing hot pink gym shorts, a t-shirt and no make-up and Hannah, of all things, was still in her PJ’s and I’m not even sure she had combed her hair. We were not the picture of business ownership or even looked liked we had anything in our lives together.
Then, walks into my office, a lovely mother with three beautiful daughters. She wanted to enroll one of them in our academy. I immediately began to apologize for my appearance and the appearance of the studio. I told them what we were doing. Hannah gave the sweet girls a tour (in her pj’s of course) of the very dirty studio as I explained why it was set up as a church. I’m thinking to myself, mom is going to run for the hills and never enroll this beautiful girl for ballet. But then, she said the most beautiful thing as I was getting enrollment information. She said to me, your studio has a wonderful reputation. Whoa, this crazy mess of a studio building that was once a bar that has now been taken back for Jesus. This momma that just wanted something different for her daughter. This girl with low self-esteem that doesn’t want another child to ever experience what I did has a wonderful reputation.
I haven’t been able to get away from that all week. Those two simple words “wonderful reputation.” What does that mean? How do you get that? Why do I have that? I’m glad I have that! Then I thought…..it never really truly matters about appearance. It doesn’t matter about pedigree. It doesn’t matter about education. What matters is you do what God has called you to do and do it to the best of your ability. Do it for Him, no one else. At the end of the day, your endeavors will matter, they will glorify God and your reputation will be wonderful. As I close today, I am reminded of Matthew 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” My challenge to you is to think about your life. Think about what God has called you to do. Think about your reputation. Are there things that have tarnished it? It’s never too late to change those things and have a new reputation, one that is WONDERFUL. Do I always get it right, no, probably not even half the time. But I try daily. I seek God’s advice and strive to live the life He wants me to live. That is all He really wants is for you to make HIM a priority and He will take care of the rest.
